Aderonke Oni Founder’s Letter

Aderonke Oni

The inspiration for the “People of Passion and Purpose” ministry came nine years ago when my family and I were making the move from Ireland to Canada. I was reflecting on how God had been gracious to us over the years and I heard God distinctly tell me that I had unfinished business to tend to. It took me some time to figure out what this unfinished business was but eventually, I remembered how I had always wanted to start a women’s ministry.

Fast forward to my 50th birthday, as I was praying and fasting, I was taken to the book of James 1: 27 - “pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress.” It became clear to me the ministry I was being called to; to mobilize a group of women who have genuine hearts for those in need, not only in prayer but also in action. So, I began to wait in prayer until the vision for this ministry became clearer to me (Habakkuk 2:3). In 2014, the “Women of Passion and Purpose” (WPP) was launched out of Ireland, in one of the RCCG parishes in county Laois under Pastor Mr. & Mrs. Samuel Famokunwa. We began by raising awareness for the ministry within the church, and with monthly prayer meetings. We wanted our ministry to be rooted in prayer and the word of God but we also wanted to ensure we were actively helping those we were praying for. Our dear sister in Canada, Aderonke Laraiyetan was instrumental in spearheading our fundraising initiative but before we moved ahead formally with this, we prayed diligently within our group. 2 yrs after our launch, our fundraising initiative became a crucial part of our ministry (1 Corinthians 16: 1-2).

Initially, we decided to call ourselves Women of Passion and Purpose, with only female members. 2-3yrs of active outreach later, God spoke through my daughter, that we should open up the ministry to our men. This led to a name change from “Women of Passion and Purpose” to “People of Passion and Purpose (PPP)” and we gladly welcomed our husbands, brothers, uncles, nephews, and sons into the ministry with open arms. Since its launch, “People of Passion and Purpose” has grown immensely, helping over 1200+ people so far through our mission. We’re grateful to everyone who continues to make this ministry what it is.
